Self-monitoring is a process that students monitor and adjust their learning activities by themselves. The capacity of self-monitoring in senior high school students could bring benefits for their high efficiency on English learning. During the English learning process, if students learn to be good at planning, executing, and applying feedback and compensation capacity well, they can realize their learning aims better. Self-monitoring stresses on students’ initiative learning. Under the pressure of exam-oriented education and examination to college, senior high school students’ self-monitoring is at an unbalance level. Meanwhile, numerous studies have shown that self-monitoring have impacts on students’ learning. Therefore, it is of great necessity to study the relationship between the English learning performance and senior high school students’ self-monitoring capacity. This study was conducted among 129 senior high school students in a Middle School with Dong Qi and Zhou Yong’s(1995) Self-Monitoring Learning Scale and interview. It aims to investigate the overall features of the self-monitoring of the students in senior high school, to explore the differences in self-monitoring capacity between male senior high students and female students, and the correlation between the English performance and self-monitoring capacity.Result reveals that: 1 The overall mean score of self-monitoring is 3.04,suggesting students in senior high school sometimes make use of the self-monitoring strategies. And as for the six sub-dimensions, the strategy of compensation is used by students most, the following are the strategy of feedback, executing, method, summarizing, the last one is the strategy of planning.2 Female students in senior high school possess stronger self-monitoring capacity than male students, which means female students take the strategy of self-monitoring more often than male students.3 There is a significant correlation between the senior high school students’ English performance and their self-monitoring capacity. The results show that the stronger self-monitoring capacity the students have, the better the students’ English performance are.Based on the findings, some implications are put forward in the cultivation of the self-monitoring:the students should realize the importance of their active participation in self-monitoring capacity cultivation; the instructors should take different strategies in stimulating the students’ motivation and help them to advance self-monitoring capacity etc.
