For a long time, language teaching has focused on helping students take more responsibility in their language study. Since the1960s, abundant studies have proved that students will become more autonomous and proficient in their language learning if they become more aware of the use of language learning strategies. As for English reading, which plays a significant role in English learning, the instruction and application of comprehension monitoring strategies are essentially important. This thesis reports on an experiment-based study that intends to investigate a learning method of improving students’reading proficiency; that is, training the students to apply comprehension monitoring strategies in the process of English reading. Based on this purpose, the author attempts to test two following hypotheses:(1) Instructions and practice on comprehension monitoring strategies can enhance students’reading competence;(2) After training, students can realize the importance of comprehension monitoring strategies and consciously use them in their English reading process. The experiment on the training involved an experimental group and a control group of the students from Senior One of Tianjin No.1High School. According to the same syllabus, these two groups received different instructions of reading comprehension. The experimental group was instructed with the application of comprehension monitoring strategies. While the control group just followed the traditional learning methods without teacher’s instruction of the reading strategies. The training program lasted for10months. The statistical analyses on the tests demonstrated that there was no significant difference between the two groups before the training. However, after the training of comprehension monitoring, the experimental group outperformed the control class in their reading proficiency. So the hypotheses raised in the first chapter thus got tested.
