Singapore Three-stream Bilingual Teaching Model Research

Under the environment of the cold war, Singapore is a newly independent tiny state with a majority of Chinese as well as a shortage of resources, so it has remained a big headache for Lee Kuan Yew Administration to survive among regional powers in such a hostile racial situation. When facing all these crises, it becomes an urgent matter to implement the strategy of rejuvenating through science and technology. Singapore had pursued the three-stream model of bilingual teaching and Successfully achieved the revitalization through education, which has vaulted Singapore into the ranks of developed countries; besides, it has enjoyed a reputation of “Ethnic fair” and “language Expo”.This thesis ummarizes four parts of Singapore three-stream model.Firstly,presents the history,political and economical background factors; Secondly, introduces two detail parts of Singapore three-stream model, through comparative analysis, determined three stages of Singapore three-stream model: germination, development and direction stage;Thirdly,introduces content, principles,approaches, methods,effects and inadequates of Singapore three-stream model implement;Fourthly,summerizes characteristics; the last is the enlightenment.In 1979 Singapore three-stream bilingual teaching model, according to the basic education stage, students’ learning achievement and intellectual level, the students are split into three different education classes.We are worthy of in-depth studying of flexible transformation mechanism of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, the concept of individualized,pragmatic path and implementation by the education law. In 1991 Singapore three-stream bilingual teaching model,Setting the EM1, EM2, EM3 three different courses because of different language levels of the students are able to accept the cultural and scientific knowledge,which not only saves the intelligence resources, and strengthen the elite education. Directly led the decline in the unemployment rate and economic development.It can be said,the successful implementation of the three-stream model created the heyday of the foundation education reform in singapore. Its successful experience is worth our country to learn from.
