| In the age of today’s global economic integration, English has been one of themain communicative languages in the world. As a communicative bridge of the world,English has been paid much more attention to by language researchers. Reading isessential for people to communicate for more information. It occupies a leadingposition in five basic English skills-listening, speaking, reading, writing andtranslating. Therefore, it is playing an increasingly important role in English teaching.However, in high school, especially in rural high school, there are still someproblems in English teaching: Some inefficient traditional teaching mode still exists;the reading ability of students is still very poor. Thus, it is imminent to improve theteaching and learning of English reading in rural high school.Based on the research of scholars both at home and abroad, this thesis adopts themethod of questionnaire and interview to survey the two classes taught by the author,and then collect the questionnaire data and analyze the transcripts of interviews at thesame time by Excel.It aims to analyze the obstacles that affect high school students’ English reading,and to find out the reasons from the aspects of teachers and students, and finally to putforward some countermeasures to solve the problems respectively, then it studies theeffectiveness of the countermeasures with experiments. It also aims to guide studentsto use a variety of strategies to improve reading speed and reading efficiency inEnglish, and finally achieve the purpose of improving students’ reading ability.Based on the above analysis, the following conclusions are drawn:1. There are two main obstacles in high school students’English reading, namelyknowledge obstacle and skill obstacle. Knowledge obstacles exist in four aspects: theaspects of vocabulary, syntax, discourse, literary style and subject matter. Skillobstacle is mainly reflected in seven aspects: the aspects of background knowledge,reading habits, reading strategies, reading self-confidence, reading purpose, readingplan, and reading efficiency. 2. From the aspect of teachers, English reading comprehension obstacles of highschool students are mainly caused by teachers’ inefficient teaching methods. In termsof students, the obstacles are mainly caused by knowledge obstacles, such asvocabulary obstacle and skill obstacle, like reading strategies.Based on the above conclusions, this essay puts forward effective teachingstrategies and learning strategies for teachers and students on how to solve highschool students’ reading comprehension obstacles. Teachers should establish a newconcept of foreign language teaching and understand high school English curriculumgoals correctly. They should also change teaching strategies to seek a more effectiveteaching mode. Finally the author puts forward four countermeasures to solveknowledge obstacles and seven countermeasures to solve skill obstacles in terms ofstudents. It is hoped that this research can be of some value to the current teachingand learning of English reading in the rural high schools. |
