Traditionally. English teachers in China draw their great attention on students’ linguistic competence such as vocabulary, grammar etc, they ignore the development of students’ Intercultural Communication Competence. Intercultural communication is conducted exchanges among people in different languages and different cultural background, in the exchange process will bring many problems and obstacles. As a fact, the ultimate purpose of learning a language is to learn how to communicate with people in different countries and cultures as language is a tool of communication.The education and the learning will play the key role in the 21st century, and the nature of the idea about the talent cultivation has been changed as the development economic globalization and pluralistic development. As a result, developing Intercultural Communication talents is a priority.This paper aims to investigate the situation of senior middle school students’ Intercultural Communication Competence. There are three research questions including what’s the current situation of senior middle school students’ Intercultural Communication Competence about; the differences in Intercultural Communication Competence between high level and low level students, and the differences in ICC between high English proficiency students and low English proficiency students. According to the investigation of senior middle school students’ ICC, the author considers that the main reasons that influenced senior middle school students’ Intercultural Communication Competence include senior middle school students has less contact with the background knowledge in second language-speaking countries and senior middle school students’ Intercultural Communication Competence is affected by negative transfer in Chinese.On the basis of the research result mentioned above, this paper will presents the quantitative and qualitative results and discussion of this study so as to answer the research questions. The quantitative analysis is to find out the consist parts of senior high school students’ICC and the present situation about it. In the other part concerns the differences in ICC between high and low English level students. In the qualitative study,5 English teachers and 20 students were interviewed respectively. The data collected was analyzed by SPSS 17.0.This paper consists five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of this research including purpose and significance of this study. Chapter two includes the definition of language, culture and communication, and a general description of Intercultural Communication Competence. Chapter three depicts the research design of this study, including research questions, subjects, research instruments, data collection, and data analytical methods. Chapter four serves the results and discussion of the qualitative and quantitative data. Chapter five gives a summarize, which gives implications for both English teachers and learners, concerns the limitation of this study and suggestion for future research.
