Vocabulary is the most basic language materials, expanding the vocabulary is the premise to improve students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. Therefore,vocabulary teaching is the key to the middle school English teaching. As for English vocabulary learning and teaching at junior middle school, there are lots of problems. To some degree, the problems mainly result from the two factors. On the one hand, some students are lack of effective vocabulary learning strategy. On the other hand, the majority of teachers do not have proper teaching approaches. In this section, the current situation from these two factors will be analyzed. In the teaching process, how to enlarge students’ vocabulary effectively? The only way is to use scientific teaching methods. This article is based on the study of the prototype theory to improve vocabulary learning.Most students often spend a lot of time remembering and learning vocabulary, but soon forgot. According to the above situation, scholars and English teachers at home and abroad put forward different teaching methods to improve the ability of the students learning vocabulary and they put forward the application of prototype theory to vocabulary teaching.Its effectiveness is verified, For example, Fan Xiaomin, Cui Fengjuan, 2006; Liao Yaoyao,2007; Zhu Shuyuan, 2007) discussed vocabulary teaching based on basic-level categories, and indicated the significance of basic-level terms. They argued that vocabulary teaching should proceed with basic-level terms, and advance gradually to other vocabulary and meanings. But these studies are only proved effectively to theory. Therefore, the author proves that prototype theory will improve the vocabulary learning both from the perspective of theory and experiment validation. By investigating the present situation of traditional teaching in the present English vocabulary teaching and analyzing, the author finds that students are not satisfied with the present learning methods and are eager to need an effective English vocabulary learning method. So, the author puts forward using the advantages of the prototype theory to vocabulary teaching, to see if it can be helpful to the junior middle school English vocabulary. Through the analysis and application of prototype theory, this thesis aims at pointing out:(1).What situation about the traditional teaching method to English vocabulary it is in junior middle school now?(2). How to improve the English learning efficiently for the application of advantages of prototype theory to vocabulary teaching? They can help students to enlarge vocabulary and improve the efficiency of vocabulary memorization.This article will prove that using the prototype theory and basic theory can help students improve English vocabulary learning. The author chooses two classes of Panjin a junior middle school as the research object, one is designated as control group and one is experimental group. On the basis of the prototype theory teaching, the author studies the question of English vocabulary learning efficiently in junior middle school and answers thefollowing two questions:(1). What situation about the traditional teaching method to English vocabulary it is in junior middle school now?(2). How to improve the English learning efficiently for the application of advantages of prototype theory to vocabulary teaching?My instrument is questionnaire and test paper primarily; the author firstly takes the form of questionnaire research to explore the current situation. Consequently, there exists a problem in current educational system. The author has performed an experimental research during the three months. The author chooses two similar classes. One is experimental class.The other is controlled class. To begin with the experiment, the author has a pre-test in the two classes. The result shows that the scores in the two classes are similar. The author takes Four Class as experimental class. It adopts prototype theory. The author takes Ten Class as controlled class. It adopts traditional vocabulary teaching approach. During the experimental class research, the experimental class adds prototype theory to its vocabulary teaching approach. It is an important method of the English vocabulary teaching. The interpretation of the polysemy words is based on this prototype theory. After the three months, students will have a post-test. According to the help of SPSS19.0, the author makes a conclusion. The score in experimental class has an obvious raise. But, controlled class has a little raise. It reveals that prototype theory can promote English vocabulary teaching at junior middle school and prototype theory has a more effective influence than traditional method.
