English grammar plays a vital role in English learning. English grammar is the rule system for organizing linguistic units. Only by following such a rule system can the meaning of speakers be understood.With the appearance and popularity of communicative approach in English teaching, the important position of the traditional grammar teaching in language learning was gradually weakened. The relevant studies of grammar stagnated. Therefore, even in the years when the study of learning strategies was thriving, there were few studies of grammar learning strategies. Then, as a subsystem of learning strategies, is there a relationship between grammar learning strategies and grammar competence? Little is known yet.The improvement of writing competence is affected by many factors, In actual teaching, all kinds of grammatical mistakes in writing make students lose more points. Then, can raising the learner’s grammatical ability be a factor of writing competence?The purpose of this paper is to study the successive relationship between grammar learning strategies, grammatical competence and writing competence. That is:is there a relationship between grammar learning strategies and grammatical competence? Is there a correlation between the learner’s writing competence and grammatical ability? Predecessors’research is based on studying two of these three variables. Based on the outcomes of previous research, this study strives to get more insight into this relationship.Based on the theory of language learning strategies, this study adopts questionnaire survey and interview. This study aims to explore the following questions:(1) How are grammar learning strategies distributed in senior high school freshmen? (2) Is there a correlation between grammar learning strategies and grammatical competence? (3) Is there a correlation between the learner’s writing competence and grammatical ability.Data collected are processed and analyzed by using SPSS and Excel. The result of data analysis shows that:(1) The frequency of overall strategies in senior one students is at a medium level. Among these four strategies, control strategy is of the highest usage, followed by cognitive strategy, and resource strategy. Communication strategy is the lowest. (2) There is a relationship between grammar learning strategies and grammatical competence. (3) Can learner’s difference in grammar ability cause different writing competence?The results are as follows:(1) The use of grammar learning strategies of senior high school freshmen is at a medium level. More specifically, regulating strategies are most frequently used, followed by cognitive strategies and resource strategies. (2) There exists a significant correlation between grammar learning strategies and grammatical competence. (3) The difference in grammatical competence can cause difference in writing competence.The significance of these results is discussed.
