Grammar has always played an important role in English teaching in middle school in China. Especially under the influence of traditional grammar-translation method, many teachers pay more attention to grammar. They spend too much time in explaining grammatical rules but ignore to cultivate students'communicative competence. With the introduction of communicative approach, grammar teaching is paid less attention to."Foreign language teaching has developed in the conflict of approving and apposing grammar teaching"(Thornbury, 2003). So what is teachers and students'attitude towards grammar? How do teachers teach grammar? How do students learn grammar? In order to find out the results of these questions, the author make a survey in Xinxiang NO.2 Senior High School.The subjects of this study are teachers and students of Grade 1. The main survey method is questionnaires and classroom observation. This article mainly studies that how teachers teach grammar to attract the interest of students and how students learn grammar to achieve the best effect.The thesis, beginning with grammatical concepts, explains that grammar is not only static in form but also dynamic in function. It is the combination of form, meaning and use. This thesis analyses the present situation of English teaching in middle school. Arranging grammar spirally, the text book has its advantages and disadvantages as well. It breaks the interconnection between grammatical points and neglects the consecutive and systematic nature of grammatical knowledge, which prevents the students getting an overall learning of grammar and is also unfavorable for their understanding and memorizing grammar. Meanwhile, a large number of English teachers'old and dull teaching ways result in the students'poor knowledge of grammar.Based on the full knowledge of the importance of grammar in English teaching and the present situation of English teaching in middle school, the thesis reflects on the problems that exist in middle school grammar teaching and also comes up with several solutions. As English teachers, we should use the teaching materials flexibly. Besides, English teachers should also make our teaching effective. Using the teaching materials flexibly and making the teaching effective in class can help the students construct their language system, enhance their language competence, cultivate their comprehensive abilities of using English, thus achieving the goal of English teaching in middle school. In studying the principles and methods of grammar teaching, this thesis tries to combine theories with teaching practice and it also gives some examples, aiming to provide the high school English teachers with some teaching suggestions. Hopefully it will be of any help to them.
