Reading motivation is an important factor that influences the students’ reading activities. There will be no reading without appropriate reading motivation. But in the rural middle school, most of the English teachers usually spend a lot of time in explaining the language points of the reading materials and pay little attention to arousing the students’reading motivation so that the atmosphere of the classroom is usually boring. The students lose their interest in reading day by day. As a result, the students are lack of reading motivation. Based on the theory of foreign language learning motivation, this paper focuses on studying the strategies of stimulating English reading motivation among third-year students in rural junior middle school. According to a questionnaire carried out among third-year students in the author’s class, the reading motivation types of most third-year students in rural junior middle school are mainly extrinsic reading motivation and weak reading motivation; the reading motivations of the boys and the girls are different and the girls have stronger reading motivation as a whole. The research also has some findings about the motivation of the third-year students in rural junior middle school:(1) Most of the students have low starting point of learning English, and their learning methods are monotonous; most of the students don’t spend much time on reading, so they have a weak reading foundation and a relatively small vocabulary which lead to a lack of reading motivation. (2)Overall the reading motivation of the students is at a low level, and the students in the author’s class are mostly lack of reading strategies. (3)The students’limitedness of reading resources deeply reduces their reading motivation, and most of the students show their dissatisfaction towards the textbooks, which are considered to be too hard and boring in content and not closely connected with the students’daily life. (4)Casual and easy reading materials such as stories and humors can help stimulate the students’reading motivation.(5)Due to a lack of interest in English and low reading motivation, many students totally give up reading. The students’attitudes towards reading are closely related to their reading motivations. On the basis of the previous research, the author gives some suggestions on how to stimulate English reading motivation among third-year students in rural junior middle school. The study includes stimulating the students’ reading motivation in class and after class. The thesis concludes some ways of stimulating reading motivation in class: cultivate the students’ interest in reading so as to stimulate the students’ intrinsic reading motivation; correct the students’ wrong reading attitude and remind them to keep reading aims clear in mind so as to stimulate their reading motivation; inspect the students’ reading process and develop their confidence in reading so as to stimulate their reading motivation; take various measures to intrigue the students’ interest in reading so as to stimulate their reading motivation; give the students instructions on reading skills and strategies and develop the students good reading habits so as to stimulate their reading motivation. In order to stimulate the students’ reading motivation after class, teachers need to attach great importance to extracurricular reading and create a good reading environment. The teachers should provide reading resources to the students and select appropriate reading materials for them. The students’ reading needs should be fully met to intrigue their reading motivation. Teachers can assign specific reading tasks and formulate effective reading plans for the students. Last but not least, teachers should give instructions to the students to improve their reading strategies and supervise their reading process.
