The Cultivation Of Intercutural Awareness In The Teaching Of Middle School English Based On Hanvey’’s Four Levels Intercutural Awareness

In recent years, English curriculum standards in China gradually attach importance to students’ intercultural communication competency and regard intercultural awareness as one of the key points in English teaching. In 2011, “the English curriculum standards of compulsory education of China” indicated that in teaching, teachers should start cultural teaching step by step on the basis of students’ age and cognitive ability. It is evident that cultivating students’ intercultural awareness is the main purpose for English teaching in the middle school. A lot of studies have been done on improving the intercultural communication competency of students from high school and colleges, while just very little research are about cultivating middle school students’ intercultural awareness. Although there are some, many of them are discussed from teaching perspective, which lacks intercultural theory and foundation. Therefore,based on Hanvey’s four levels of intercultural awareness and literature studied by experienced teachers, my paper analyzes how to cultivate intercultural awareness in the teaching of middle school English. By doing that, it may provide a new perspective for studying middle school students’ intercultural awareness. Besides, this paper may have certain teaching and practical influence. The process of improving students’ intercultural awareness may not only improve teaching efficiency, but reduce the phenomena of worshiping western culture blindly, prejudice against other cultures or ethnocentrism and help intercultural exchange and communication.
