With the development of reform and opening-up, China communicates moreclosely with other countries. English, as an international language is playing animportant role in communication in the world. As we all known, language is anindispensable part of culture. Therefore, only when we understand the culturalconnotations of language and apply them properly, can we master the language. Sohigher requirements have been put forward for English teaching, not only teaches itslanguage knowledge, but also the related cultural knowledge, thus to cultivate students’ comprehensive ability of using English.The New Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(Tests), which wasissued by China’s Ministry of Education, first required the Senior High School tocultivate students’ cultural awareness. Owing to the pressure of entering the collegesand universities, many English teachers in senior high school only emphasize languageknowledge and skills, while they ignore the related cultural knowledge, which make thestudents’ cultural consciousness weak. Therefore, according to the requirements of NewCurriculum and the textbook printed by People Education Press, the paper combinestheoretical analysis, questionnaires, test, interview and experimental method to ascertainthe present situation of cross-cultural awareness cultivation in senior high schoolEnglish class. To solve the problems, the author puts forward some feasible suggestions,and put them into the experiment of cross-cultural teaching in senior high schoolEnglish class, which aims to provide some reference for culture teaching in senior highschool. The experimental results have proved: the suggestions proposed by the authorare operable; it not only has a practical significance, but also has certain guidingsignificance for cultivating students’ cross-cultural awareness in senior high schoolEnglish class.The paper includes six parts: Chapter one is introduction, which provides theresearch problems, purpose and significance, methodology of the issue, as well as theinterpretation of cross-cultural awareness in the New Senior High School EnglishCurriculum Standards(Tests). Chapter two is the literature review, which introduces therelated achievements in cross-cultural teaching both home and abroad. Chapter threemainly presents the current situation of cross-cultural awareness of English teachers andstudents by questionnaire survey and analysis in the senior high school. Chapter fourintroduces a teaching experiment that conducted in a high school, aiming at theinvestigated questions. First, the author introduces the experimental principle, purposeand object, and then the author puts forward the experimental scheme and conducts theexperiment. At last, the author analyzes the experimental results and data to verify thehypothesis. Chapter five provides some feasible suggestions for how to cultivate thestudents’ cultural awareness effectively. The last chapter is the summary of the paperthat contains the conclusion and the deficiencies of the study.
