Objective Through the investigation of the status of the waste classification in a university, and to survey on the knowledge, attitude and practice about garbage classification among the university’s students, faculty members and staffs, explore their relationship, and to put forward a feasible proposal for implementing waste classification. To carry waste classification collection and processing of the effective measures and suggestions, which will provide a scientific method for smoothly garbage sorting.Methods By using self-designed questionnaires and accidental sampling method, we surveyed 32 university cleaners and managers on the qualitative interview investigation, 1623 university students, faculty members and staffs on the quantitative questionnaire survey. Completed data entry and statistical analysis with Epi Data3.02, EXCEL 2010 and SPSS19.0.ResultsThe University has two department of garbage sorting. A property company specialized cleaners hired have more than 40, is responsible for student dormitory and faculty family area. The other is a school’s own property management department has more than 60 cleaners, is responsible for teaching area and campus area. Respondents agreed that dustbin will help to improve the environment, reduce pollution, and promote waste recycling. But most of cleaners thought that the school’s dustbins did not play the role of classification.KAP survey to evaluate the reliability Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.577, the validity of construct validity were evaluated for factor analysis, structural design is reasonable. Better cognition was existed in students of environment major. The graduate student’s cognition level was better than undergraduates, only child’s cognition level was better than not only children. Bachelor degree or above in the faculty cognition was better. Teachers and researchers have the highest scores; freelance workers have the lowest scores. The best cognition in the city, the worst cognition in the countryside, the town’s in the middle. And generally lowest awareness rate of hazardous waste.Students and non-Students’ perception of garbage basically the same, the difference was not statistically significant(c2 = 1.709, P = 0.635). Two groups of garbage understanding of the meaning selection difference was statistically significant(c2 = 19.862, P = 0.001). The difference between the two groups of garbage daily processing method was statistically significant(c2 = 31.450, P = 0.000), the behavior of non-college students deal with garbage better than college students.There existed a statistical significance between knowledge and attitude, and between attitude and practice(P<0.05).The proposal of waste classification: 34.3% of people choose to strengthen publicity education and improve citizen consciousness. 12.6% choose to strengthen legislation and violations. 10.0% choose to encourage waste recycling use of scientific research. 9.4% choose to set up special waste classification regulation departments. 4.5% choose to carry out the waste classification knowledge competition. 29.1% of people choose all effective methods are acceptable.Conclusion Currently the school garbage classification was not done well, basic facilities were not able to meet the classification needs; awareness of the population in waste classification was not good, and also had a good attitude, and acceptable behavior. The main factors influenced the garbage classification was background, education level, and household conditions. We should strengthen the promotion of waste classification, provide with convenient facilities, standardize the waste management in practice, and improve the laws and regulations, so as to promote people insist on good behavior habits in daily life. Ultimately achieve the goal of scientific refuse classification.
