Nowadays English writing has been an increasingly important communicative way in which people exchange information and express their thoughts and feelings. Therefore,English writing plays an important role in senior high school teaching. However, there are many problems in the current English writing teaching in senior high schools. How to improve students’ writing proficiency and how to motivate students’ interest towards English writing become urgent and challenging in the pedagogical tasks.Concept map is a popular teaching model based on Ausubel’s Meaningful learning Theory, Schema Theory and constructivism. This teaching method has been applied widely in America and other European countries and proved to be very effective in improving students’ learning ability. But very few studies have been carried out on the concept map, especially in the aspect of English writing in senior high schools in China.This research mainly focuses on the study of concept map and its application in English writing in senior high school. There is an experiment related to the concept map in this study.The subjects are 100 students from Class Seven and Eight, Grade two, No.2 Experimental School of Shijiazhuang. Class Seven is experimental class and Class Eight is control class.Concept map is applied in experimental class while traditional teaching method is applied in control class. The experiment lasts about five months. The research instruments applied in this study are: pre-test, post-test, questionnaire and interview, which are used to check whether the concept map is effective or not.The data collected from the study are analyzed after the experiment. Then a conclusion can be reached that the application of concept map to the teaching of English writing in the senior high school is an effective method and can improve students’ writing proficiency, and activate their interest in English writing. Finally, it proves that concept map is more effective than the traditional teaching method and should be widely used in senior high schools.
