Being a basic unit in a sentence and an article, vocabulary is certainly an essential factor in language learning. Without vocabulary, the so-called language will be like “a tree without roots, water without sources”. However, on account of the fact that primary school pupils do not have good study habits, when faced with boring words and vocabulary to learn, they often lose their learning interest. Therefore, more and more teachers begin to continuously explore new methods of vocabulary teaching. Of them, the context-based vocabulary teaching, which makes the boring vocabulary learning task lively and interesting and improves learners’ study enthusiasm, is increasingly welcomed by most of the teachers. Based on the above recognition, this study also tends to explore into the context-based vocabulary teaching, with a focus laid on primary school English.Guided by context teaching theories, this study adopts questionnairesand an experiment to collect data, analyze the problems existing in primary school English vocabulary teaching, and implements the context-based vocabulary teaching. According to the changes of primary school pupils’ learning methods, attitudes and feelings before and after the experiment, the study analytically summarizes the features and effects of context-based English vocabulary teaching.During the teaching experiment, the author of this paper, while taking into account primary school pupils’ learning habits, creates direct, vivid and visible contexts through courseware design, vocabulary connection, performance activity and extended reading so as to fully display learners’ creativity, interest and initiative. Integrating context-based vocabulary theories into the teaching practice and test, the experiment aims to help primary school pupils to learn and use vocabulary through context, cultivating their rational attitudes towards and interest in vocabulary learning. The study results suggest that context-based vocabulary teaching can arouse students’ interest in vocabulary learning; It can also improve students’ English vocabulary application abilities; Context-based vocabulary teaching has a higher effectiveness in promoting students’ academic performance. As a result, context-based vocabulary teaching is an effective method for primary school pupils’ vocabulary learning, a new alternative for primary school pupils’ English vocabulary learning and English competence improvement.
