Junior high school English Curriculum Standards(2011) clearly point out that in English teaching, the general objectives of curriculum in culture teaching are “mastering of cultural knowledge, strengthening cultural understanding, and cultivating intercultural communication awareness and ability”. Among of the three goals, cultivating cross-cultural communication awareness and ability is the ultimate aim in English teaching. To achieve this aim, it requires English teachers to understand the cross-cultural communication theory deeply and take “culture teaching”, the basis of cross-cultural communication, as teaching principles to guide teaching method and set teaching content and to develop students’ cross-cultural communication awareness and ability unconsciously. Vocabulary teaching is the basis of language teaching, and the implementation and completion of language teaching objectives depend on whether the students have effective and successful vocabulary teaching. Based on the two aspects, it is necessary to use cross-cultural communication theory to guide English vocabulary teaching. That is to say, the teachers can introduce the cultural knowledge in vocabulary teaching, so that students can understand the cultural connotations of vocabulary. This method can not only enhance the students’ interest in vocabulary learning, enrich their cultural knowledge, but also can make the students use vocabulary accurately in communication, avoid misunderstanding and communication barrier, and improve their cross-cultural communicative competenceThis paper reveals the relationship between cross-cultural communication theory and language learning, and further explains the necessity of cultural teaching in vocabulary teaching through a number of relevant literature research and sort. Select five representative teachers to interview in a certain experiment junior middle school. In this interview, they understood the attitude, ideas and teaching methods of teachers in vocabulary teaching and found some existing problems in vocabulary teaching. It mainly includes: 1、Lack of principles for effective vocabulary culture teaching. 2、Teaching method is single, and students are not interested in. 3、Shortage of knowledge of cross-cultural communication and four aspects of problems about the neglect of cultivation of cultural awareness in the curriculum standards. Through questionnaire survey of 271 students in three grades of a certain experiment junior middle school, the students’ awareness and ability of cross-cultural communication and the status of English vocabulary learning are investigated, especially vocabulary and cultural connotation learning problems. It mainly includes: 1、The attitude of "culture learning" is not correct. 2 、 Vocabulary learning method is single and think it not helpful to learn cultural background knowledge in vocabulary learning. 3、Four aspects of problems about the understanding of cross-cultural communication contradictions.Finally, aim at those problems, this research from the angle of cross-cultural communication integrates literature review relevant theories, principles and methods and put forward corresponding application strategies of cultural teaching in English vocabulary teaching. Those strategies mainly include: 1、The establishment of teaching principles in vocabulary culture teaching. 2、Teaching methods in vocabulary culture teaching should be diversified. 3 、 Seven strategies about materializing the culture teaching content in vocabulary teaching.
