With the economic globalization and integration, English has become an universallanguage. The purpose of English teaching is to let students communicate with others inEnglish freely. However, after10years of English learning, many Chinese students canbe satisfied with the score on the test paper, but they can’t communicate with theEnglish native speakers successfully. The main reason is that they lack of thecross-cultural awareness, they can’t really understand the national culture of Englishspeaking country.This thesis is based on the theory of the pedagogy, psychology and linguistic theory.In order to find out the current situation of junior high school students’ cross-culturalawareness, author make a questionnaire and send it to the students, the questionnaire isdesigned according to the new curriculum standard of the cultural awareness and themental characteristic of junior high school students. On the one hand, to find out thecurrent situation of junior high school students; on the other hand, analyze the influencefactors of junior high school students’ cross-cultural awareness rising. Attempting togive some suggestions about English teaching of junior high school and promoted thecross-cultural awareness theories’ development which is in the field of English learning.The investigation shows: all of the junior high school students’ cross-culturalawareness is too low, the culture knowledge, culture understanding, awareness ofintercultural communication and intercultural communicative competence should beimproved. the rural students’ cross-cultural awareness is lower than the city students, thenon-demonstrative school students’ cross-cultural awareness is lower than thedemonstrative school students. The main reasons include some internal reasons,such asthe students do not pay attention to the cultivation of cross cultural awareness, the effectof ethnocentrism and so on. The external reasons include school education environment,the teachers’ culture quality and so on.For the reasons mentioned above, this thesis puts forward the following countermeasures: Establishing good teaching conceptions; Understanding and handingthe relationship between cultural awareness and language teaching correctly; Enhancingstudents’ background knowledge and culture understanding competence, promotingstudents’ intercultural communicative awareness and competence.
