A Study On The Application Of Social Work To Elderly Interpersonal Barriers

As a special group, age makes the elderly who face their physiological hypo-function in nursing home. For example, the elderly in nursing home have to suffer hearing and vision loss, slow action and thought, which seriously affect older people to communicate with others. Additionally, due to the limited resources in nursing home and the lack of professional staff, the nursing homes can’t provide professional services for the elderly. As a result, they can’t take necessary measures for the interpersonal barriers performed by the elderly in nursing home. Therefore, how to improve the organization’s professional pension services make the society pay more and more attention. It is an inevitable trend to apply the professional approach of social work to the field of the pension agency.In this paper, the author studies how to apply the social work to the elderly who has the interpersonal barriers in the nursing home. Firstly, the author adopt the literature review, participant observation and the in-depth interview to investigate the performances and causes of the interpersonal barriers, from 150 elderly person in nursing home. The results showed that 40.67% of the interviews who have different levels of interpersonal needs. What’s more, their interpersonal barriers mainly involve hospital physiological disorders, disabilities, cognitive disorders and emotional disorders. According to the demand for the human interaction and their interpersonal barriers, the author has considered multiple factors, which include physiological factor and psychological factor, to provide social work for the elderly people who has interpersonal barriers in the nursing home.The author select five seniors and three nursing person as the team members who would be guided to participate in group activities. In addition to that, the author selected an old woman as a typical case, who has stayed in the nursing home for five days. According to her actual situation, the author design the social service programs.In the process of the intervention of social work, the author carried out assessment and reflection in each aspect of the intervention. The author analyzed the effect of the interventions in social work and summarized the experience and inadequate aspect by the use of the two aspects, which are the achievement of the goal and the progress of the person. The results shows that, by the use of case work and group work in a professional way, it makes the elderly who has interpersonal barriers in the nursing home improve his interpersonal skills, expand intercommunication scope, and improve quality of his own life in nursing home. Finally, in order to establish a mature social service mechanisms in nursing homes, the author reflects on many things such as the issues encountered during the intervention, the social workers facing the plight of the roles, and the development and complement of social work in nursing homes.In short, the author approach social work intervention in the interpersonal problems of the elderly in pension institutions, and hope to make pension institutions more harmonious, relieve the loneliness and anxiety of the elderly with professional social work methods. The author also wants to make them adapt to the society better and achieve a real sense of pension institutions in dignity.
