The Research On American College Campus Culture And Its Enlightenment

Campus culture has the characteristics attached college icon in colleges and universities which is formed under the background of social culture. Teachers and students as the main body of all campus people, forming in the long-term process of running by campus combined all material and non-material wealth including the spirit culture, material culture, system culture and behavior culture. College campus culture has a variety of functions, including educational function which is the core function, and social radiation function is the extension function. Modern society is the era of high-speed development of market economy, the change of international environment give colleges and universities new challenges, because of campus culture sends the campus outstanding achievements and characters to the society, therefore, the study of campus culture is practical significance. American colleges and universities as the leaders of high education, its good experience of campus culture can provide suggestions to our colleges and universities, in order to improve our campus culture to be perfect gradually.This dissertation is divided into five parts.First part, Introduction.This part introduces the background of the research on American college campus culture, it starts from the theory and experience to expound the value of research in this topic. Then, by analyzing the culture both China and international campus culture to explain what college campus culture is. This dissertation main use the literature method, observation method, case method, cross-cultural study method, comparative research as the research methods. The innovation of this dissertation is to update the theoretical system of the campus culture, combined with the characteristics of the American college campus culture and the existing problems which take enlightenment to China in a proper local roots’ way.Second part, The summary of the basic theory of college campus culture.By using the definition of culture and campus culture to explain what college campus culture is. And analyze the college campus culture’s connotation by its composition, characteristics and functions.Third part, the characteristics of American college campus culture.This part is the key part of the essay, mainly from the composition of the college campus culture includes spirit culture, material culture, system culture and behavior culture to analyze the characteristics of American college campus culture. First of all, based on the basis of academic freedom, introduce American university spiritual culture in the liberal environment and positive rigorous teaching style and the style of study, and then, analyze the American campus material culture mainly reflected in the architecture and landscape, the campus product, and the application of science and technology and the network. Secondly from freshman selection system, the setting of basic courses and campus community activities, to explain the system culture is leading by general education as the guiding principle. Finally, by showing American teachers’ competition, competitive sports and students’ behavior to introduce the behavior culture which towards to chasing excellence in American college campus culture.Fourth part, the existing problems in American college campus culture.The author based on the understanding of college campus culture is in subculture type, combined with the social background and the existing problems of American culture problems through four aspects, this part is a significant and difficult part of this dissertation.First of all, starting from the value of individualism, American students’ behavior culture exposes the lack of praising individualism highly.Secondly, from the liberal ideology of ethics, by the basis of teachers’ value orientation and students’ ethics, analyze the situation that American campus culture is loss of independence gradually and tends to be utilitarian.Thirdly, combine the multicultural trends with relativism, reveal the problem of racial prejudice in American colleges and the root cause of American disease problem.Finally, combine the opening feature of American colleges with the capitalist market economy, to explain the negative influence of economic society to the will of subject and characteristic of American college campus culture.Fifth part, American college campus culture’s enlightenment to Chinese universities’ construction.First of all, from the perspective of spiritual culture, come up with the viewpoint of cultivating the good spirit of university, summing up experience from the existing problems of American campus culture, to set up a correct value system as the top priority, at the same time, college spirit and teachers’ team construction are necessary to build the excellent college campus culture.Secondly, from the aspects of American college material culture by advanced experience, always attaches great importance to the construction of material culture, increase the application of science and technology and the network to promote the optimization of campus cultural environment.Thirdly, through the system culture and behavior culture enhance the subjective initiative of students’ infection, in college activities, traditional festivals and college community activities play important roles in students’ subject status in college campus culture.Finally, take cultural inheritance and innovation as our duty, to carry forward Chinese traditional culture value, increase international exchanges, to increase new blood in Chinese campus culture, and then keep pace with times and endure advanced campus culture.
