English writing is an important language skill. However, many students are passive to write in the traditional writing teaching class. Because different students have different writing problems and they hold a negative attitude towards writing in the teacher-centered class. Faced with this situation, it is necessary to apply stratified teaching to English writing class which focuses more on students’ individual differences and meets students’ needs of different levels to improve their writing capabilities. This paper mainly discussed the implementation of stratified teaching through which students of different levels are provided with stratified teaching objectives, stratified teaching process, stratified evaluation and stratified homework.This study aims at exploring the effects of stratified writing teaching, and two research questions are introduced:1. What are the changes of students’ attitudes towards writing in stratified teaching approach?2. What are the effects of stratified teaching on student’s writing ability?The experiment was carried out in one middle school in Xingtai, Hebei Province and lasted for one semester. The subjects are selected from Class 7 and 8 of Grade eight. Class 7 was chosen as the experimental class and class 8 as the controlled one.Students in Class 7 were provided with stratified teaching approach while those who are in Class 8 were taught by traditional teaching approach. Three instruments were used in the experiment namely, questionnaire, test and interview. Questionnaires were used to investigate students’ writing attitude and motivation before and after the experiment. Interview was carried out to check whether students change their negative attitude to a positive one after the experiment. Meanwhile, pre-test and post-test paper were used to investigate students’ performance on English writing achievement before and after the experiment. After the data collection and analysis, the author analyzed the results of the experiment as well as the two research questions. As the statistics implied, students at different levels were tend to hold a positive attitude towards writing under stratified teaching approach. In conclusion, stratified teaching approach is effective in improving every student’s writing proficiency.
