Hong Ren is one of the most famous painters in Huizhou region, his life has undergone a dynastic change and social unrest. The development of Hong Ren’s painting has countless tie with the integrative cultural zoology in Huizhou then. Huizhou Merchants have played an important and irreplacable role in the formation process of Hong Ren’s art style. In order to find out the authentic work, we need to have a deep and precise investigation on his historical tracks and social relations.Therefore, research methods that belong to authentication of painting and calligraphy, socio-cultural history and many other fields are used here. Through the study on interaction between Hong Ren and Huizhou Merchants, many associative research finds and achievements could be enriched.This thesis is divided into five chapters in the structure. Chapter One briefly introduces the background, propose and methods of this study.Previously, there’re two types of study about Hong Ren. The first type is about the style of his paintings. The other one is synthesize analysis on Hong Ren’s life story. Relatively, the individual case of Hong Ren’s painting is rare and the discussion about the authentication should be improved.In chapter two, firstly I did the literature consulting to ensure the way and the figure Hong Ren tried to learn from. The well educated Merchants made it possible toappreciate precious paintings in Huizhou region. And many famous scholars come to this area and bring their art idea at the same time, such as Dong Qichang. Hong Ren inherited the most quintessence part from these great artists and scholars,especially Ni Zan who is respected by the merchants. We need to note that Hong Ren has a wide range of the painting tastes and his painting style become more Changeable then we thought before.Chapter three demonstrates the relationship between Hong Ren and Huizhou Merchants. Among them, the Wu family in Xixinan village is the most important sponsor in Hong Ren’s life. That’s why the Wu family own many masterpieces from him. Because of the strong feeling to their county-fellow, Hong Ren’s landscape paintings mainly targeting at Huizhou area. Mount Huang and scenery of Xixinan are two common theme in his painting. However, with the change of aesthetic ideas, Huizhou Merchants turn to enjoy the paintings conveying noisy and lucky popular in Yangzhou. Hong Ren’s painting style is unique in history but his successors fail to copy the austere spirit in his painting.In chapter four is the conclusion. based on documents and literature, the author analyzed his correct birth and death dates so that we can find out some paintings are not created by Hong Ren. The author have made charts to show that it is difficult to divide his painting into different period. Actually, most of Hong Ren’s paintings are drew within ten years before his death. Meanwhile the author summarized the characteristic of the seal and postscript among the authentic paintings. We should pay attention to the fact that Hong Ren’s follower did some painting and calligraphy clone, which are common in Qing dynasty.The chapter five is the case analysis. The author did a careful study on the characteristics in the stroke and color. Hong Ren has very powerful straightly lines and his dots on mountains are unique. By summarizing the features of Hong Ren’s authentic paingtings, we can find out the suspicious work such as one landscape album at Changzhou Museum. Apart from that, one landscape painting in Guangdong Museum and the other one in Wuxi Museum are twins in content and structure. The author gave a preliminary guess that both of them should be the genuine work.On the basis of previous research, this dissertation attempt to re-judge Hong Ren and his art style in the way of comprehensively comparison. In conclusion, the author expects to complement and to deepen the acknowledgment of Hong Ren’s painting and calligraphy style in the perspective of Huizhou Merchants’ connoisseurship.
