This dissertation focuses on the appreciation and collection history, and takesZhang Boju as the subject of research, who is a connoisseur in the era of Republic ofChina. Zhang Boju (1898-1982), originally named Zhang Jiaqi, courtesy title CongBi and pen names You Chun Zhu Ren, Hao Hao Xian Sheng, Cong Bi Shan Fang,and Ping Fu Tang. He was born in Xiangcheng, Henan Province. He started collectingcalligraphy and painting at the age of30. At the same time, he dedicated himself tothe research on poetry and opera. He compiled “Cong Bi album of calligraphy andpainting” which includes his collection from1927to1960of117pieces calligraphiesand paintings through the ages. To prevent the rare cultural relics been sneaked outoverseas, he spend immense amount of money on collecting ancient calligraphy andpainting. Since new China was founded, he donated a large part of collections to thePalace Museum and Jilin Province Museum.This dissertation researches on the connoisseurship achievement on calligraphiesand paintings of Zhang Boju. The first part is the introduction of family backgroundand the biography. The second part is concerned the experience of his collections. Thethird part isthe main collection of Zhang Boju. The last part is the living condition inhis later years. This dissertation intends to present Boju Zhang’s connoisseurship andcontributions specified and comprehensively by existed resources.
