Since athletics are vapid and tedious, they have become inconsistent with the characteristics of the mainstream sports in the current campus. Consequently, they have been rejected by a large number of students. However, as a fundamental discipline, athletics still occupy an unshakable position in institutes of physical education. The quality of athletic education has declined because of students’ negative attitude, reduced teaching hours and the traditional and simple teaching pattern. Hence, improving the quality of athletic course has become a question that urgently needs to be solved. Instructional design in sports is a classroom operation scheme that’s formulated in accordance with the objectives, characteristics and requirements of physical education. Through the improvement and optimization of the instructional design, the quality of classroom teaching can be enhanced. It is suggested by research that in the teaching of the various open projects in sports, the application of reverse teaching can sometimes reach the teaching objectives efficiently in the short term. However, the majority of athletics are closed projects, and the few research in this field is deficient in the depth. With the purpose of verifying the influence of reverse teaching and traditional teaching on athletic teaching, and proposing trains of thought for the instructional design of athletic course that’s more applicable to the current conditions, an experimental research is conducted on students who were admitted to the College of Sports Science, Shenyang Normal University in 2013 and 2014. The methods of experiment, video analysis and mathematical statistics are adopted, and the following conclusions are reached:1. Both of the instructional designs can play a certain role facilitating athletic teaching. However, under the dramatically reduced teaching hours of athletic course in Chinese colleges and universities, the design of reverse teaching, which is under the pattern of “complete exercise---segment correction”, can better realize the teaching objectives and achieve more significant teaching effect than the traditional segment teaching during the teaching of strongly technical projects in athletics.2. By integrating such means as “evaluation of teaching ability”, reduction of scoring scale and shortening of scoring gap, the previously simple and rigorous standard of evaluation is optimized, so as to avoid the decline of teaching quality caused by students’ difference in physical ability. While enhancing students’ comprehensive qualities to the maximum, the degree of recognition towards athletic course is subjectively enhanced. Furthermore, this also provides scientific reference to the subsequent reform of other practice-oriented courses for sports majors in colleges and universities.3. Other than instructional design, there are many other factors that will exert influence on the effect of physical education. The internal factors mainly include students’ physical quality and subjective interest in studying. The external factors mainly include weather, fields, facilities, teachers’ teaching ability and personal charm, etc. However, these influencing factors are always uncontrollable, which will exert certain influence on the teaching achievements. Therefore, teachers should thoroughly consider these questions during the teaching, and reasonably evaluate the teaching effect.
