Graded teaching is mainly designed in accordance with the requirements of the syllabus. Students are divided into different levels for teaching. Teachers put forward different levels of teaching aims and requirements, and they adopt different teaching approaches. Graded teaching aims to make all students achieve the requirements of curriculum. In this study, the author divided students into two groups based on their English levels, and then gave different lessons to them accordingly.The study aims to find out whether graded teaching is a more effective teaching mode that can make up the deficiency of the traditional classroom-teaching mode. In the paper, the author presents the purpose and the significance of study, the definition of graded teaching, and relevant researches home and abroad. With a large number of data collections, and a series of teaching measures implementing, the research finally gives some valuable views on graded teaching in the rural middle schools. The research mainly focuses on the following questions:(1)Is graded teaching mode more effective in improving students’interest in English learning than the traditional classroom-teaching mode?(2)Is graded teaching mode more effective in improving students’performances on test than the traditional classroom-teaching mode?The research participants are students in Grade Seven of a middle school in the rural area in Hangzhou. From September,2015 to January,2016,74 students in Class 7 and Class 9 took part in the experiment. At the beginning of the semester, the author graded students into two groups according to their performance in pre-test and pre-questionnaire, then the author implies graded teaching mode on these two groups of students for a semester. After analyzing and comparing the results of tests and questionnaires before and after the experiment, the author finds out compared with the traditional classroom-teaching mode, the graded teaching mode is more effective in improving students’interest in English learning as well as students’performances on test.
