Since graded teaching,as a scientific teaching mode,was introduced to China in the 1990s,experiments on it have been carried out in many regions of our country.Some experiment centers have been set up on graded teaching and a lot of achievements have been made.But in the inland,especially in the countryside where economy and culture are relatively underdeveloped,graded teaching is difficult to be popularized and cannot show its great value.After analyzing the current situation of English teaching in her school and studying about the reform practice in China,the author decided to carry out graded teaching in the school.The study was based on such theoretical frameworks as "Mastery of learning theory","Zone of proximal development theory" and "Optimization of teaching process theory".The purpose of the thesis was to improve the current situation of English teaching by applying graded teaching mode to English teaching in Class Five,Grade Eight,in Dongzhuang Junior Middle School,Xizhuang Town,Shaanxi Province,from September to December,2006. And in order to find out the teaching effect,the author chose its parallel class——Class Six as the controlled class. Before and after the experiment,two test papers(pre-test paper and post-test paper)were used to investigate students' performances on English achievement.At the same time,a questionnaire on English learning was also used in the study to investigate students' learning situation before and after the experiment.According to the statistical analysis of a-term-experimental datum,graded teaching was more effective in improving students' interest of learning English and their English performances on test than the traditional ungraded teaching mode.The thesis consists of seven parts.The first part presents the background,the purpose and significance of the study.The second part covers the definition of graded teaching and previous researches both at home and aboard on it.The third part shows the theoretical frameworks of graded teaching.The fourth part indicates how to carry out graded teaching in English classroom in junior middle school.The fifth part tells how to collect and analyze the datum of the teaching effect.The sixth part discusses the results of the teaching effect.And the last part is a summary of the whole thesis,in which the author also puts forward its limitations and gives some suggestions to further studies.
