In this high-speed developed society of science and technology, teachers can no longer satisfy students’ desire of seeking knowledge by using only one book. The insufficiency of the existing system of teachers’ continuing education, the popularization of lifelong education idea and the trend of teacher professional development require teachers to improve themselves by autonomous development. Teachers of English, as the disseminator of western culture, the bridge of cultural exchange between east and west, and the workers to cultivate excellent foreign language talents, play an irreplaceable role in enhancing students understanding of other country’s culture, helping absorbing the advanced western science and technology. Therefore, English teachers need to keep learning and growing under the background of teachers’ autonomous development to meet the needs of the society and teaching. High school English teachers, as the facilitators of English learning and English culture, need to become the teachers with the ability of autonomous development.Based on the questionnaire and interviews of English teachers in five high schools in Zhanggong District, Ganzhou City, the author found that the current high school English teachers’ autonomous development ability is not strong, the mainly reasons are: First, the defects exist in the current teachers’ continuing education system hinders the enthusiasm of teachers’ autonomous development; Second, teachers themselves lack the consciousness of autonomous development; Third, teachers know little about autonomous development strategies. Combined with the result of the questionnaires and interviews and the actual situation of teachers in our country, the author points out that teacher’s autonomous development is not the result of teacher’s unilateral efforts. It’s the results that various factors, such as society, school and individual teachers, interact and coordinate. So the author advocates that the strategies for the autonomous development should be made from the three aspects: education authorities, teacher groups and teacher individuals. And the author puts forward that creating the campus culture of learning, improving teachers’ evaluation system, teachers learning to reflect on teaching andcolleagues’ cooperation are effective means to promote the development of high school English teachers’ autonomy.
