In 1983, since the U.S News and World Reporthas issued the first international university rankings, many countries worldwide tried to launch their own university rankings. Simple and clear university ranking can not only present a "university quality report" for the public, but also be regarded as a new way of higher education evaluation. U.S. News Rankingshas a long history and rich experience, and gets higher popularity among readers. On the one hand, it has been frequently questioned and criticized by the universities and scholars for arbitrariness in the choice of the indicators and data. As U.S. News Rankings, most of the ranking in the world are facing the same dilemma, getting much popularity but little approval. In 1994, the Center of Higher Education in German was established, and later launched aranking, which attracted the attention of researchers all over the world in short time.U.S. News Rankings and CHE Rankings are gets the same fame but different appraise internationally.In this paper, a comparative analysis will be made between CHE rankings and U.S. News Rankings,from the perspective of external power, ranking subject, data sources, and the original assessment, combined with analysis of the impact and development of the CHE rankings and U.S. News Rankings. This study intends to sum up the advantages and disadvantages of these two rankings, and find the reasons causing difference. Based on the analysis and comparison, the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions will be put forward for tackling the difficulties of the university ranking in China. This paper is divided into six parts: the first part, mainly expounds the background, ideas, methods and other issues of this research. The second part, will introduce development of the global university rankings and its status quo, and figure out the specialty of U.S. News Rankings and CHE ranking, also mentioning the plight of China’s universities ranking. In the third part, the paper introduces the development course of the two rankings, and their influence on the students, universities, government and international rankings. The fourth part is the core content of this article, revealing the different backgrounds of the two rankings, different rankings team, accessible data, and meta-evaluation environment. Part five and six are summarization of comparative analysis, basing on the results of comparative analysis, recommending corresponding countermeasures and suggestions to tackle the difficulties of the university ranking in China.
