In domestic English teaching in middle high school, reading plays an important role. However, although students have attended many reading classes and done a lot of reading exercises, they still can not read and grasp the main ideas of the reading material quickly, and complete the tasks concerned with the reading materials. Under this circumstance, applying Problem-based Learning Approach to promote reading teaching has become an inevitable trend.The study conducted a teaching experiment which lasted for a semester to do a research about the application of Problem- Based learning to English reading classes. And it aims to solve the following three questions:1. Can PBL help students to generate effective questions?2. Is PBL efficient to arouse students’ English learning interests?3. Can PBL improve senior high school students’ English reading?In this study, the author adopted a way of contrasted experiments. In the experimental class, PBL Teaching approach was adopted to teach the students English reading, while in the contro1 class, the teacher sti11 fo11 owed the traditional teacher-centered method for English reading teaching. By the ways of pre-test and post-test, pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire and the classroom observations, the study drew the fo11 owing conclusions:1. PBL teaching method could promote the students’ learning autonomy,and students’ interests of English reading learning.2. PBL teaching method contributes to the cultivation of creative way of thinking and help students to generate effective questions.3. PBL teaching method has a positive influence on students’ language performance.
