With the growth of the economic globalization, English has gained the important position of the international lingua franca and has also played an increasingly important role in international communication. So, many countries are strengthening and improving their school English teaching under their educational system. China has always attached great importance to English education for students. As an important means to improve their English language competence, reading teaching has drawn special attention. In recent years, the reason why teaching of reading has become one of the research subjects and has aroused wide concern is that it not only is one of the important tasks of the English curriculum and teaching, but also plays an important role in uplifting students' learning ability and comprehensive qualities of English.Reading teaching, as a major part of the English teaching in senior high schools, not only teaches students the knowledge of the language, but also stimulates students' innovation. Teachers should adopt scientific methods to provide reading instruction, to enable students to master reading skills and gradually build capacity of accessing and processing information of English.Presently, the English teaching in China's senior high schools is facing many problems. From the perspective of teachers, the problems are as follows:firstly, the teaching mode is simplified and the teaching philosophy is out of date; secondly, teachers' class planning is inflexible and the topics of reading are not extensive enough; thirdly, The teacher-centered approach is still dominant, and the activities designed by teachers are often unable to arouse students'interest to read English; fourthly, the tools of evaluation are over-standardized, leading to barriers to students' all-round development. From the perspective of students, poor reading habits, a small vocabulary and psychological barriers in reading are also factors affecting the development of students' reading capacity. How can we solve these problems in order to improve students' English reading ability? The author believes that the introduction of a separate reading class to students in senior one is a good choice. A one-semester experiment in the class the author teaches has been conducted to test the effectiveness of this means. Experimental results show that the method can better improve students' English reading ability, and enhance their linguistic competence in general.
