Cultivating students’ English reading skills so as to improve their reading abilities has been a significant goal for the teachers to research thoroughly. Through researching literatures, the writer found relevance theory can play a significant role in reading. Based on relevance theory, reading comprehension is an ostensive-inferential cognitive procedure instead of a passive procedure. Inference ability plays a crucial role in reading comprehension. Lots of researches on relevance theory also show that there is a positive correlation between inference ability and reading ability. Relevance theory is instructive to the reading teaching.With the theoretical guidance of relevance theory, adopting which teaching model in English reading class becomes another question. The research shows that in recent years, the game teaching in junior high schools exhibits strong vitality and is welcomed by students. The playfulness of English teaching activities which advocates the spirit of games in the whole process of English teaching can build an enjoyable and effective learning environment for students. The introduction of teaching games in junior high school teaching will not only imitate the relatively real English learning environment, spur students’ interest in learning English and students’ self-learning abilities, but also effectively improve students’ inference ability and reform the traditional teaching method which is one of the important channels for teaching innovation.By combining the relevance theory and game teaching, the writer tries to come up with a new teaching method named inference game teaching methods of English reading course. It based on relevance theory as well as game teaching and applied inference reading model to guide students to participate in reading teaching. In this paper, the writer implements many kinds of instruments, such as teaching experiment, questionnaires and interviews to test the validity and practicability of inference game teaching method. By analyzing the data collected from the experiment in this period of time, the rational application of inference game teaching method has obviously positive correlation with improving junior high school students’ reading ability, developing their inference ability and enhancing student’s cooperative learning ability. The results of this experiment confirmed that inference game teaching method is beneficial for improving the effect of English reading teaching in junior high schooland developing students’ reading ability.
