Automatic electronic ignition torch system is widely used in petroleum, natural gasand chemical industry. The Jacob arc principle is successfully used in the ignition basedon PC machine and PLC control system, thus it realizes management of automaticignition.The torch system device and several common kinds of flame detection technologieswere firstly introduced in this paper, then the existing disadvantages of the system wereanalyzed. In order to eliminate the ever-burning lamps of the torch, and makeconfiguration, control, signal processing, emergency measures under fault cases, theprevention of tempering explosion and self-testing of torch control system to achieve ahigher standard, also ensure the normal and safe burning without black smoke, a methodof applying flame monitoring method based on image processing technology to thereformation of the automatic electronic ignition torch system was presented in this paper.The size of flame and smoke genereted by the burning torch greatly reflects itscombustion condition. The color and static features of flame and smoke were analyzedwith a variety of image processing methods in this paper. The ignition device would beautomaticly adjusted at first according to the judgement of the lighting conditon bydesigning the torch ignition automatic control system, which was based on the extractionof the flame area. If the torch was in lighting condition, the ratio of smoke would becalculated and the result should be regarded as the feedback parameter in the torchcombustion automatic control system, whose role was to regulate the flow rate ofnitrogen gas and steam in the torch barrel, thus the stable and reliable control of the torchwas achieved finally. The normal and safe combustion could be ensured by using theimproved system for the real-time torch monitoring, therefore this study had certainvalue to the goal of saving costs and reducing the energy consumption.
