Wireless network is one of the leading ways for individuals to connect to the Internet. It has become the new tend in today’s public cultural building to provide wireless connection services in the densely populated area. As the popularity of wireless network increases, a variety of network services for the bandwidth requirements of wireless networks are increasing. The load imbalance distribution in wireless local area network can easily lead to uneven waste of network bandwidth resources, the overall deline of network performance and some other problems. How to balance the load in large scale wireless networks, allocate the bandwidth of wireless network resources rationally, optimize the performance of wireless network on the whole, has become one of the most important research contents in wireless networks.First, we elaborated association service, roaming service and load balancing service of IEEE802.11protocol. Then, based on the initiator of load balancing and the solution of load distribution, we divided the existing load balanced scheme into station-mastered access type load balancing, AP-mastered access type load balancing, station-mastered handoff type load balancing and AP-mastered handoff load balancing. We also carried detailed analysis and performance evaluation to the above-mentioned.Aiming at wireless network, we put forward a AP-mastered handoff type load balancing algorithm(AP Master). The new load balancing algorithm does the wireless terminal’s access and handoff process controlled by wireless access points and without the need for any modification of the wireless terminal. It collects the information of all the wireless access points and wireless terminals in the WLAN periodically, and control the access of new wireless terminals into the WLAN. According to the collection of wireless access points’MAC layer queue length during a period of time, the algorithm judges the loads of each access points. When an access point is heavily loaded, it makes decision of wireless terminal’s switching and reconnection according to the total load of of the wireless LAN and the distribution of wireless terminals to balance the load of access points in order to meet the maximum throughput of the whole network. Furthermore, we put forward a design thought of seamless handoff.At last, we achieve the working process of access points by using Madwifi driver. A true network environment was well set up and the realization of APM Algorithm was finished to compare with IEEE802.11protocol. The test result showed that, the load balance capability between APs in APM has been improved compared to other algorithms, the throughput of the whole system has been increased to a certain extent. APM has greatly made good use of the limited wireless bandwidth resource and improve the performance of the whole system.
