Internet of Things (IoT) not only realize communications in traditional networksamong people via sensing technology, but also take communications between humanbeings and things or inter-things into reality. Environmental monitoring based on IoTis an innovative mode in current field of environmental monitoring. The surveillancesystem needs large amount of environmental data, and all these data need to beanalyzed and processed. Besides, scientific management of data is a guarantee ofeffective running of the whole system. Therefore, a suitable database which meets therequirements of environmental monitoring system is designed based on the features ofIoT system.In this thesis, basic conception, overall framework and bottom wireless sensingnetwork of IoT are introduced firstly. Then, performances of different kinds ofdatabase are evaluated and prepared. Considering the various advantages such as opensource, simple structure, platform portability, easy to use, fast execution, etc, MySQLis chosen as background data server.Java applications in IoT environmental monitoring system connect to MySQLdatabase through JDBC driver, and corresponding data tables are added into thedatabase for storage and management. According to the requirements of the system,four modules are designed, namely, user module, sensing module, user survey moduleand user feedback module. User module provides the access to usersā€˜information,including query and modification. Sensing module stores the information of sensingnodes in the system. Using of the environmental monitoring system is investigated inuser survey module and the feedback is collected in user feedback module.User survey module and user feedback module are the two unique part in thedesigned database. Users take part in the construction of system platform viasubmitting suggestions and feedback. User participation is emphasized in theproposed database. That helps developers to design user-friendly system and theavailability of the whole system is improved.
