With the rapid development of the global civil aeronautical industry and the increasingimprovement of IPv6technologies, ATN/IPS is considered as next generation infrastructurenetwork for the civil aeronautical communication. Different from the common mobile IPv6network,the mobility is high-dynamic and massive-regional in ATN/IPS. The high-speedflight will reduce the performance of the air-ground wireless link, for example the bandwidthutilization and the communication delay. The paper proposes that ATN/IPS may adopt thehierarchically structured network model, and researches the route optimization in theair-ground communication. It aims to reduce the communication delay caused by the airbornesubnet’s handover from one access network to another in the ground, and to make thecommunication real-time and reliable.Firstly, the high-speed flight will make the access network handover very frequent forthe airborne subnet. For this reason, the hierarchical network and the stateless addressauto-configuration is proposed in ATN/IPS, to reduce the handover delay and the mobilitymanagement signaling.Secondly, ATN/IPS faces the airborne subnet mobility problem and the subnet consists ofmany various communication nodes onboard. Based on the hierarchical structured topologicalnetwork, the paper proposes new strategies for the route optimization. The MAP managementdomain divides handovers into the local handover or the regional handover. At the localhandover, MR and MNs on the airborne mobile subnet have no need to send BUs to theirrespective HAs, and this mechanism remarkably reduces the signaling overhead. The LNsonboard will be added the mobility function by MR. As a result of this operation, the routebetween a CN and a MN or a LN can be optimized in the same way to simplify the procedureof route optimization. Finally, in this paper, the experimental simulation platform for ATN/IPS is built to testthe route optimization schemes in the hierarchical network. In comparison with the mobilitymanagement scheme based on NEMO BS, the simulation results indicate that the proposed solutions achieve better performance in improving the end-to-end communication delay.
