Accompanied with the rapid development of Internet technology, telephone communication has a gradual transition from traditional PSTN network to IP network, and gradually merging together. Softswitch has a core status in the convergent network, telecommunication network is developing from technology-oriented to business-oriented, while user demands for new services are increasingly diverse. In order to meet the needs of users, the development of an open softswitch-based value-added services become the main task of the current telecommunications network.Asterisk is an open source PBX software running on the Linux system, it has advantages of feature-rich, easy to expand, low hardware cost, high universality and easy maintenance. Asterisk can achieve various functions of the large-scale commercial PBX, such as voice mail, interactive voice response (IVR) and voice conferencing. The open source feature of Asterisk makes development of value-added telecom services easy and flexible. This paper first introduces the background knowledge related with softswitch, and introduced the concept, architecture, the main functions and interfaces of softswitch and so on. Secondly, this paper also introduced the knowledge of Asterisk platform, which focuses on the relevant knowledge of the design and implementation process, such as the Asterisk dial plan, Asterisk AGI interface etc.. In the design and implementation part of the paper, we introduced the design and implementation methods of a value-added services system which based on Asterisk platform, including call forwarding, three-way calling, call pickup, and so forth the commonly used value-added business functions. The design is developed on the basis of existing features of Asterisk platform, and this design has also greatly enriched the business functions of Asterisk. The paper provides a detailed process of each business, design ideas and methods of implementation. Finally, this paper summarizes the achievements and shortcomings in the working process and introduces the focus of the future work.
