With the rapid development of today’s networks, the scale of the network has been larger and larger, along with increasingly complex network structure,it has been difficult to deal with the composition of the increasing flow of data by a network equipment consisting of a switch. Therefore, in order to improve the reliability of the network, strengthen the network scalability, and simplify the management of switches, virtualization technology for network equipment has come into being.IRF (Intelligent Resilient Framework) software virtualization technology connects multiple switches through a physical port, and with necessary configuration, a switch is virtualized. Compared to other equipment virtualization technology, IRF has the advantage of ordinary hardware requirements, high reliability, and good scalability. However, a series of problems will rise up when equipment is stacked without any treatment in Layer 2 forwarding process. Therefore, how to ensure that the IRF system normally deal with Layer 2 forwarding packets is the core research content of this thesis.Combined with the background of the project, the thesis studies on the problems when the unicast and broadcast forwarding packets in Layer 2.And give the forwarding requirements in different networks consist of different number of networking switches.According to the requirements,a plan is designed to solve the problems when the out port in normal port and aggregation port of the unicast and broadcast. For the broadcast, the thesis logically cut off the loop to suppress the happening of the broadcast storm for normal port. And filtering the message on the output port for aggregation port. For the unicast, the thesis study out a plan to guide to normal forwarding for normal port. And forwarding the message to our expectation port for aggregation port. Finally tests show that, the solution the thesis provides can effectively solve problems of Layer 2 packets forwarding in the IRF system, meanwhile providing a reference for the implementation of Layer 2 forwarding in the stacked systems.
