Although the transition of hospital strategic management to traditional enterprisepattern’s strategic management was late, certain theoretic development has been obtained.Hospital strategic management meets the demand of era and benefits hospitals in theaspect of long-term development, which has attracted much attention of hospital managers.However, the hospital strategy management theory in China is mostly based on theguidance of foreign theory. Therefore, problems as lack of culture foundation, imperfectstrategic management theory tools, confused strategic analysis, changeable strategies andlack of stability are prominent in the implementation of strategic management. Somehospitals’ internal and external environment analysis is conducted by direct referringclassical strategic management as hospital strategy management. It could be a goodtheoretical suggestion for hospital strategic management but lack of practicality. Facedwith the rapidly changeable and increasing competitive external environment, hospitalstrategic management is often trapped in continuous and efficient implement as well asawkward situation that plan is inferior to change. Therefore, it seems that traditionalstrategic management mode cannot ensure hospital a continuously excellent development.Under the current background of new healthcare reform and unique medical servicein our country, lots of realistic subjects demand solutions from hospital leaders. Forinstance, in such a changeable and competitive environment confronted by many mainhospitals in large cities, in order to enhance the core competitiveness of the hospital andcomplete the goal of hospital development, how to formulate the strategic managementthat can be both helpful for self-development and accepted by hospital staff as a target to achieve? Such problems need active research and exploration of management researchersand practitioners. As a relatively new strategic management mode, strategic intent patternhas been used in enterprise strategic management successfully but few cases are found inhospital strategic management.This paper is based on a descriptive case study of a single case. A certain third class Ahospital in Guangzhou, a affiliated hospital of a comprehensive university, was taken asthe research object (in this article this hospital is referred to GS hospital). Strategic intentpattern was used as theoretical framework. Under the strategic management theory, casestudy of GS hospital strategic management was performed in order to present and analyzethe connotation of the strategic management mode, as well as verify the feasibility ofstrategic intent pattern in hospital strategic management thus further summarizing the keypoints of strategic intent pattern in hospital strategic management.Initially, detailed theory introduction of the strategic management under strategic intent mode and the strategic intent pattern was presented. Then, the current development of hospital strategic management theory in home and abroad as well as disadvantages of that in China was analyzed, lying reliable theory basis for the study of GS hospital with the strategic intent model under hospital strategy management. In the case description part, through data collection and scene description method, specific measures of GS hospital’s strategic management and its outcomes under the model of strategic intent were collected and organized. Comparison of the GS hospital’s development and that of other similar hospital were conducted by quantitative analysis method. As for the case evaluation, the method of inductive analysis and simulation comparison research were performed to analyze the GS hospital strategic intent pattern connotation. In the conclusion, the application necessity of the strategic intent model in public hospital by case study of the GS hospital was analyzed,with the conclusion of the strategy intent pattern’s essential in the hospital strategic management.This research through case study of GS hospital strategic management with thestrategic intent model aims to verify the feasibility of the strategic intent model in hospitalmanagement, conclude and extract the essential of strategy intent model in hospitalstrategic management, try to contribute to the theory research and practical application in exploration of a new mode of hospital strategic management.
