The paper chose all prefecture-level cities and above of1990,2000,2010as the objects ofstudy; identified9industry indicators, such as industrial, construction, etc; determined a scaleindicator, the total population of municipal districts in end of year; studied the evolution of China’surban functions for20years. The research is divided into the following three parts:First, a comparative study of Zhou Yixing-R. Bradshaw Method (Zhou-Bradshaw Method),the most influential and Self-Organizing Feature Map Network Method (SOFM NetworkMethod).Found that:①The computation rate of Zhou-Bradshaw Method was faster, theclassification results were stable, and the numbers of classification categories were easier to bedetermined. But it was more subjective and weight setting had great impact on the classificationresults.②SOFM Network Method were more objective, the results were more reasonable and theurban functional characteristics were more obvious. But the numbers of classification categorieswere unable to be determined, the classification results were unstable. From the angle of theobjective and good classification effect, the paper chose SOFM Network Method as researchmethod. It classified more than once to improve the lack of SOFM Network Method.Second, research of China’s urban functional structure evolution: studying the evolutionarytrend of functional structure about the country, the different city size, the eastern, middle andwestern region, the three urban groups(Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, Yangtze Delta Region, PearlRiver Delta Region.); studying the evolutionary trend of various industry sectors between thevarious levels. It concluded:①Changes in functional structure of the three urban groups are quitedifferent, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region was greatest, and Yangtze Delta Region was least.②Finance and insurance industry grew fastest, the rate of employment proportion was greatest; theemployment proportion of industrial and commercial(except Pearl River Delta Region) declined, but industrial was also greatest; Education-culture-sanitary-sports and social welfare, real estateand social service industry grew faster, the employment proportion came the second or third; Theemployment proportion of architecture industry changed more active, and it occupied an importantposition in extra-large cities, large-cities, middle and western region, Yangtze Delta Region and the proportion was the third; Public administration sector grew fastest in small and medium-sized cities, the proportion was the third.Third, research of China’s urban functional characteristics evolution. China’s urban functionwas divided into3categories,9sub-types, and in turn,14,14,12functional groups in1990,2000,2010. With Nelson index, the paper firstly analyzed evolution characteristics of thethree categories from the functional size and functional strength; Secondly, it named the functionalgroups, and analyzed the evolution characteristics and rules. It concluded:①The size of citiesincreased, functional strength enhanced, the comprehension of city enhanced.②The functionaldiversity of the country or large district integrated city enhanced.③The leading functions ofShijiazhuang, Hangzhou and other cities developed from the second industry to the tertiaryindustry.④Industrial-based large-scale comprehensive industrial city and the medium-sizedindustry cities developed to the comprehensive cities. In short, China’s urban functional structurewere more optimized, the development of the city economic had a qualitative leap.
