In recent years, China has become one of forest industry manufacturing centers in the world. Man-made board productions rank the first place in the world, which laid a significant foundation for the wood processing industry development. As the increasingly serious shortage of wood raw material problems occur with the increasing capacity. What’s worse, lack of efficient demand predicting method application, inventory control research and information management in wood processing enterprises, results in the troika of supplies (put in storage), needs (put out storage) and management (in stock) into a dilemma. Competition in wood processing enterprises has gradually reflected in the supplying of feedstock.Benefit of a wood processing industry mainly come from resources. It is imminent to control the inventory of raw materials to ensure the stability and continuity of the production line feeding.The paper mainly comprises four parts as follows:1. Wood raw materials demand predictingBased on the research made in man-made board companies including Fujian Yong’an man-made board company, the paper studied and analyzed the characteristics of wood raw materials demand and prediction accuracy, the prediction method was determined with these two things considered, establishing the combination predict model of exponential smoothing and gray prediction method, testing the accuracy, it could well reflect the growth trend of monthly demand.2. Raw materials inventory control strategiesBased on the demand predicting results, putting the economic order quantity model and safety inventory control theory to practice, the complete inventory control strategy was put forward, including these parameters as safety stock, order quantity, reorder quantity, the minimized periodic total cost accounting etc. Using the economic order quantity model was a good way to avoid the rise of costs caused by reordering or high inventory holding costs, through safety inventory control theory we calculated the basic state of the guarantee smooth production and made insurance stocks at least, it would reduce the total inventory cost.3. Development of inventory decision support systemThe development and design of raw materials inventory decision support system was based on the investigation on the businesses of the wood processing enterprises. Eclipse with cross-platform open source integrated development environment, Java programming language and MySQL database were used conbinedly to facilitate the wood raw material inventory data integration, synchronization and sharing. Through the six modules of entering, outing, checking, reporting, statistics analyzing and decideing, we guaranteed for the material flow and information flow to be symmetric, and strengthened the day-to-day management of raw material inventory. The more important is decision module which applied the previous one and two research result, and provided optimal inventory strategy for plants from the overall situation.4. Main conclusionApplying raw materials warehouse data of Yongan man-made board factory, the paper tested the overall functions and stability of the system. As the matter of the overall system efficiency, on one hand, the system could reduce the workload of users thus the work efficiency was improved. On the other hand, reasonably controlled inventory of raw materials could save considerable cost. Through the sensitivity analysis, we found that if a purchase order was near the EOQ, the actual costs and was likely to reach the mimium, variable cost near the minimum was relative stability. A relatively low service level of safety stock would result in larger costs increase because of the shortage cost was far higher than the cost of holding. When the service level was the more close to100%of the ideal value, the cost would be very expensive. The relations of customer’s service level, shortage cost and inventory holding cost should be considered overall, these can provide important theory instruction value for inventory decisions.
