With the economic development and people’s living standards improving, Traditional consumption patterns changed to information consumption. Compared with the traditional material consumption, improving our residents’ information consumption level could promote China’s economic development. With the Internet developed rapidly, eastern and western regions showed a growing "digital divide", which will affect the balanced development of the whole society. Therefore, improving the information consumption in the western region is conducive to the sustainable development of society.Firstly, the paper overviews the concept, characteristics and influencing factors of information consumption. Because information consumption has "ratchet effect","demonstration effect", externality, intellectual and other features, the income level, education level, the development of the information industry determine the level of information consumption.Secondly, the paper uses spatial econometric methods to exploratory data analysis for information consumption level in the western region. Selecting five indexes which affect information consumption deeply, establish space constant coefficient models and spatial variable coefficient models. The result shows:1, information consumption levels in the western region presents certain autocorrelation in the space, the areas have (higher) lower information consumption level tend to gather with the area with (higher) lower information consumption level.2, income level, education level and mobile phone penetration have a significantly impact on the level of information consumption in the western region. Otherwise, the proportion of practitioners in the information industry, information industry accounted for the proportion of GDP have a little effect on the level of information consumption in the western region. Finally, on the basis of theoretical and empirical research, the paper presents policy recommendations about developing information consumption in the western region.
