Under the background of deepening economic globalization, with the rapiddevelopment of sharing information and technology, the growing learning ability ofenterprises, the increasing homogenization of products, the enterprises are faced withgrowing competition and reducing profit margins. In order to survive and achieverapid, sustainable development in such a keen market condition, enterprises start torethink the importance of R&D and seek new development model, hoping to producethe high value-added products via technical innovation to get better performance. With the rapid development of the market economy, the expanding size oforganization and the increasing complexity of business environment, due to thelimitation of individual comprehensive analysis capability, the decision-making bodylike the board of directors has gradually replaced individuals and become thedecision-making center in the modern enterprises governance. The ability of the boardmembers has influence on the enterprise decisions which include the decisions on theR&D, and ultimately influences the enterprise performance. Therefore, the furtherstudy on the correlations among professional competence of the board of directors,R&D and enterprise performance has some theoretical and practical significance. In this paper,50high-end equipment manufacturers with A-stocks listed inShenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges between2008and2012are selected for aresearch on the relationship among professional competence of the board of directors, research input and enterprise performance. At first, an introduction is made torelevant concepts for research contents of this paper, followed by an analysis on theinteraction mechanism among professional competence of the board of directors, research input and enterprise performance. Based on the above relevant concepts andinteraction mechanism, this paper proposes a research hypothesis, establishes amultiple regression model, makes an empirical analysis on sample data with statisticalsoftware, and reaches a conclusion for the relationship among professionalcompetence of the board of directors, research input and enterprise performance.According to the research, there is a remarkable positive correlation between theenterprise performance and the working experiences of the board of directors, the heterogeneous occupational background of directors, and the educational backgroundof directors and a remarkable positive correlation between the R&D and theheterogeneous occupational background of directors, and the educational backgroundof directors. Then,it is found through the empirical analysis that the professionalcompetence of the board of directors in a state-owned enterprise plays a less role infacilitating enterprise performance when compared with a non state-ownedenterprise.But there is not a obvious correlation between the R&D and the workingexperiences of the board of directors, Besides, there is also a remarkable positivemediation effect between the R&D and the heterogeneous occupational backgroundof directors, the educational background of directors and the enterprise performance. With the first ownership property as the boundary, this paper divides sample data intostate-owned enterprises and non state-owned enterprises. Finally, on the basis of theconclusion, this paper raises some solutions and suggestions.
