Constructors are directly responsible for the construction projects, and the badbehaviors of who may exert significantly harmful impacts on the constructioncompanies, as well as the project itself and related stakeholders. However, theresearches on bad behaviors of constructor are presently scattered and suffer a paucityof theory foundations. Therefore, this study introduces the concept of deviantbehavior, follow the research framework as “definite the behaviors—construct thetypology—investigate the situation”, to study on the recognition and typology ofprofessional deviant behaviors of constructors:Through theoretical analysis, it could be drawn that constructors act multipleroles as they are employed by the organization, regulated by the government, andtrusted by public, as a consequence, their behaviors are restrained by organizationsrules, laws and the professional ethics, shaping the bound of constructors’ behaviors.Then the definition is drawn from systematic perspectives including behavior subjects,objects, nature and outcomes.According to the definition, the manifestations of professional deviant behaviorsof constructors are recognized through interview survey, literature review and brainstorm based on internet, from construction companies, related government departmentand public respectively. A list of36professional deviant behaviors are collected andcategorized into a two-dimensional typology through Multi-dimensional Scalingbased on the differences between the behaviors. One dimension is“Internal—external”, and the other is “ethical—institutional”, and four categories is“counter-productive behavior”,“internal anomie behavior”,“unethical workbehavior”, and “unethical professional behavior”.The scale to measure professional deviant behaviors of constructors has beendesigned on the basis of the typology, and modified step by step through thefeedbacks from pre-study and pilot study, and the reliability and validity is acceptableas well. Using this scale as the measurement to investigate the current situation ofprofessional deviant behavior of constructors, and the sample is employedconstructors working in Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Chongqing. Andthe results are analyzed through a framework as macro dimensional analysis from frequency distribution paradigm, meso categorical analysis of “Diamond Model”, andmicro behavioral analysis from the score of specific behaviors. At last, strategies andadvices for the governance of professional deviant behaviors of constructors isproposed according to the research results.
