In the past20years, many countries in the world have been paying more and moreattention to protect the natural environment, particularly concerned about the impact of energyconsumption and pollution to the environment in industrial production. Companies arestudying how to save energy and reduce emission in the manufacturing sectors whiledesigning more environment friendly products. Remanufacturing can reuse some scrap parts, reduce the procurement of raw materials and their manufacturing processes. Not only thefunction of remanufactured product does not differ from the new product, but also the qualityand the reliability are very close to the new one. The remanufactured product can also havegood service guarantee. Therefore, this business is more and more acceptable for companiesin the developed countries or regions such as Europe, America and Japan, and becomes themajor revenue source of the service department among these companies.Compared to new product manufacturing, remanufacturing is more complex in theprocess due to the uncertainties in quantity and quality of the returned cores. How to balancethe relationship among production capacity, cycle time, cost and quality is an importantresearch topic. This thesis firstly introduces the forecast and evaluation works if an originalequipment supplier wants to start a remanufacturing project, trying to use the economicsdiffusion model to analyze the feasibility of developing a remanufacturing business. Then itdiscovers seven complicated characters of remanufacturing by reviewing the operation modeof remanufacturing plant, followed by in depth discussions on these characters one by one. Itconcludes the key points on the implementation of lean remanufacturing, so as to provide thetechnical support to the progress of remanufacturing project. Finally, it takes the example ofcompany A’s Asian remanufacturing center, where the author had ever worked for a year, tostudy its remanufacturing project’s successes and short comings through combining thetheoretical knowledge of feasibility analysis and remanufacturing characteristics.
