After several decade developments, standardization has become asignificant role in mass production. However with technology improvementand commercial competition, flat organization is becoming a more commonstructure for many companies. In a flat organization, each business unit (BU)manages a family of product from design to sourcing, advertising and sales. These parallel BU operation systems severely block the currentstandardization process. In current practice, an authorized standardizationdepartment is essential to unify standardization, mentor correspondingprocesses, and update components library. However, this department could behard to set up in a flat structure of organization. The new standardization process avoids setting up such an authorizeddepartment, but tries to build a continuous development standardizationprocess. This process encourage design engineers to choose existingcomponents instead of design a new one to decrease unfamiliar components and increase the purchasing volume of cheaper and more popular parts everyyear. By the increasing volume of these common parts, supplier managementdepartment could negotiate more reasonable prices for these parts. Finally thecheaper prices could reinforce design engineers to implement existing parts. This virtuous circle leads to the final target of standardization, decreasing theparts number and cutting down cost.During the internship in company A, the new standardization processwas carried out for Thermal Interface Material standardization project.During the project in the company, the new standardization process wasimproved a lot including cost saving modeling development. This modelcould enhance the motivation of design engineers who are key elements ofthis new process.
