Since the reform and opening, the foreign trade volume of our country has made a great breakthrough, and the coastal trade throughput keeps rising steadily. As the import and export portals of sea cargo, the strategic status and economic efficiency of ports has been greatly promoted. But for old wharf which has been built for a very long time, the good market situation is an opportunity as well as challenges. Facing the huge capacity demand gap of shipping market, all of the port groups choose to seize the opportunity to build new types of specialized wharves, making the living environment of old wharves even more serious.D company of Tianjin port is a typical representative of the old pier. In the history, as a terminal stevedoring company, D company engaged in nearly all kinds of sea cargoes and completed the most annual throughput. However, recently, D company is in a management dilemma.Because of the group’s industrial layout adjustment and the sourcing Policy of the government, D company has experienced the cargo transfer of bulk coal and container which are the big pillar of the company. What is worse, the bulk cargo operation efficiency of the company is low while its operation cost is on the high side. As a result, the company has got into serious trouble. Through in-depth investigation and research of D company, we find out that the main problem is that the structure of cargo is not reasonable which contributes to the imbalance between throughput and economic benefits. Therefore, the study on the structure optimization of D company is of great significance.Firstly, this paper introduces the existing research of structure optimization at home and abroad. Then, this paper expounds the related theory of commodity structure optimization. After that, this paper discusses the current management status quo of D company from two aspects of internal and external, and sums up the main problems faced by D company in commodity structure. On this basis, combining with model of principal and interest, homework cost method, analytic hierarchy process and system engineering theory, this paper constructs a commodity optimization model. After that, this paper takes the operating data of Tianjin port in 2013 for example to do the cost quantitative analysis and commodity contribution evaluation to identify the importance of different commodity. Finally, according to the evaluation results, this paper puts forward some improvement measures and suggestions from three aspects: choose differentiation competitive strategy, attach great importance to the hinterland sourcing market development and improve the internal management level.
