With the rapid urbanization and industrialization process, the urban agglomeration has started to become the main form of urbanization development, and the urban agglomeration has the characteristics of gridding, which can not only play a role in the growth pole, but also improve the country’s competitiveness.Currently, the research on urban agglomeration which acting on regional economic ties, and the complexity of its spatial structure have become a focus of regional economics andgeography. Transportation acted as a link between regional economic ties, and it is a carrier in orderly development, rational organization and spatial structure of urban agglomeration, has been an important driving force in the formation and development of city.Therefore, the study of urban agglomeration characteristics based on transportation network has some important theoretical and practical significance to promote the implementation of the strategy of urban agglomerations.HBE urban agglomerations is a part of "two vertical and three horizontal" regional urban agglomerations which were proposed by the Chinese Central Government in 2013. But, this district is a sensitive areas where has fragile ecological environment as well as arid and semiarid climate, with the gradual development of regional socio-economic, more and more serious problems have appeared, such as the extensive growth of regional economic, tensions between Man-land relationship, low efficiency of resource use, environmental degradation, and excessive pressure in economic transformation. This paper analyzed the background of urban agglomerations and reference from related research by experts and scholars, structure theory of urban agglomeration, location theory,transport and urban form theory as the guiding ideology, collect data from natural factors, socio-economic factors, regional transportation network factors which were affecting the evolution of urban agglomerations, with GIS spatial analysis and grid technologies, comprehensively analyzed the formation and evolution mechanism of HBE urban agglomeration spatial structure, dissected the essential connection between traffic and the urban spatial evolution, developed the research on spatial structure evolution in HBE urban agglomeration based on transportation network extension,proposed some optimization to traffic oriented spatial structure in HBE urban agglomeration.This paper is divided into the following areas:ChapterⅠis the introduction. In this section introduced the research background, significance, research programs and research progress. Is a simple exposition about purpose and significance of this paper; as well as is a simple review and comments on existing research; at last, confessed the routes and methods which were used in this article.In chapterⅡ, summarized the basic concepts and theories of urban agglomeration.Chapter Ⅲ, collected natural factors which influence the development and evolution of urban agglomeration were regional DEM data, climate data, river systems data, soil data, etc. Economic and social factors include residential data,demographic data, GDP data and the regional transportation network data. Use the GIS spatial analysis and grid technologies, make a grid expression with these factors, analyzed the natural conditions and human environment of spatial structure in HBE urban agglomeration, and analyzed the use of traffic factor in HBE urban agglomeration.In chapterⅣ, on the basis of comprehensive analysis of the history and current situation in HBE urban agglomeration, using GIS platform,analyzed distribution of regional road space, road density and spatial differentiation of transportation development indicators, and thenanalyzed the traffic reachability. The results showed that, the best accessibility area is located in Hohhot and Baotou City and surrounding counties, the value of reachability is less than 100 min, and the most best is Jiuyuan district where the reachability is 71.24 min.In chapterⅤ, analyzed the spatial layout of traffic guided HBE urban agglomeration and the formation and evolution mechanism, economic relation intensity, temporal and spatial regional transport links of HBE urban agglomeration. The results showed that, economic ties of HBE urban agglomeration are growing year by year, and the highest economic relation intensity appeared in between Hohhot and Baotou(value is23.0476), Baotou and Dalate Banner(value is 103.263), Dongsheng and Yijinhuoluo Banner(value is 12.665). In some cities, which the transport links value are Lp ≥ 1, the proportion of passenger traffic and total passenger traffic decreased from 91.86% in 2003 to 30.95 in 2012; the cargo is just the opposite with passenger traffic, increased from 20.98% in2003 to 82.65% in 2012. The above analysis, proposed a spatial structure optimization to HBE urban agglomeration. That was, select the areas located along the main traffic arteries of the Yellow River as the key development areas, develop regional central cities and county towns and "Three vertical and three horizontal" polycentric spatial structure. In short,building "#" type development corridor in HBE region.ChapterⅥ is conclusion and discussion, summarized the innovation and deficiencies of this paper, for consecutive modification. For the optimization of urban spatial organization in HBE, as well as the optimization of spatial layout in HBE urban agglomeration, and social and economic development of HBE region, the results of this study has important theoretical and practical significance, can be used as the scientific basis of urban development and urban planning.
