Urban spatial pattern is the space distribution states and their combinations of human social and economic activities in urban area. It is the comprehensive reflection of the politics, economy, society, culture, producing, natural conditions, engineering technology and architectural space, etc. Under the influence of many factors, urban spatial pattern is evolving constantly. In the background of speeding up the implementation of the new urbanization strategy currently in our country, the research of urban spatial pattern and its evolution process is still a very important topic. In this work based on the viewpoint of "point-axis-concentrated area" in the theory of point-axis system and with the help of abundant modern technological means and relatively reliable methods of measurement, taking Hubei province as the research example, a systematic research of urban spatial patterns of Hubei province and its evolution characteristics was conducted from three different perspectives which are urban nodes, urban connections and urban clusters. It mainly includes the following three parts:(1) The pattern of urban nodes and its evolution. Firstly, based on the DMSP/OLS night lighting images, the urban space of Hubei Province in 1992,2002 and 2012 was obtained. Based on that, the light index model was established, the urban scale was measured and the pattern of urban scale and its evolution was analyzed; and the shortest transport time between two cities was calculated, then the accessibility between any two cities and its evolution was also analyzed. Results showed that Wuhan, Xiangyang, Yichang, Huangshi, Ezhou-Huanggang, Jingzhou, Shiyan were the highest and established cities on the rank of urban scale in Hubei province in which the polar nuclei status of Wuhan is very obvious. There’s no necessary relation between traffic accessibility and the light scale of the cities.Cities with good traffic accessibility are tend to be located in the center which was surrounded by other cities.(2) The pattern of urban connections and its evolution. The connection intensity model, the total amount of the connection model and the membership degree of the connection model were adopted to analyze the connection intensity between any two cities, the total amount and the membership degree of the connections of every city. Results showed that the connection intensity, the total amount of the connection and the membership degree of the connection are influenced by the urban scale, the location, the density of the surrounding cities, and the accessibility of high-grade cities and so on. From 1992 to 2012 the overall connectivity of Hubei province was greatly improved and the connections and mutual influence between any two cities is becoming closer and closer.(3) The pattern of urban clusters and its evolution. Firstly, according to the the biggest connections of every city, the dominant and subordinate relationships among the cities was analyzed. Then using the method of condensing subgroup, "clique" analysis was conducted for main cities. Further taking into account the patterns of the urban nodes and their connections, the characteristics of city clusters and their evolution were analyzed in Hubei province. It was found that Huangshi and Ezhou-Huanggang, Yichang and Jingzhou, Xiangyang and Shiyan have a strong cohesion; while Xiaogan and Suizhou have a relatively loose connection, but they all have strong connections with Wuhan, and they have a better connection with Huangshi and Ezhou-Huanggang at a higher level; The connection of Jingmen, Yichang and Jingzhou is steady and gradually increasing and forming a relatively stable "growth triangle". From 1992 to 2002 three urban agglomerations were formed of which Wuhan, Yichang, Xiangyang are their centers, and the size and structure were gradually matured; Enshi, because of remote location, is very difficult to be under the "YiJingJing" radiation. In the future it can be well developed as a small town agglomeration.
