Rural tourism have centuries of history in Europe and other developed countries, and also becomes an important component of the tourism industry in China. Therefore, with the development of rural tourism industry, it faces many problems that is unfavorable for its further development, such as the ambiguous definition for connotation of rural tourism, the environmental deterioration of rural tourism region, an increasing number of complaints about law and order, and the unawares disappearance of rural original landscapes, unclear focus point of policies and measures from administrative department and so on. In view of this, this article will focus on the identification of criteria for defining concept of rural tourism and influencing factors for rural tourism development affecting recognition, and relevance and importance of key influencing factors, in order to provide a reference for the management and research on rural tourism development.Firstly, by researching the Chinese and aboard academic achievement in field of conceptual connotation of rural tourism, influencing factors for the rural tourism development and the application of DEMATEL, this paper proposes many questionable point:What are the criteria to build the concept of rural tourism? What are the influencing factors for rural tourism development? How important are influencing factors for rural tourism development and what causal-effect relationship they take shape?Secondly, utilizing content analysis, sorts out Chinese and abroad relevant research on the connotation of rural tourism and identifies7criteria constructing definition of rural tourism:sustainability, urban residents as the main market, village-based, rural cultural heritage tangible and intangible, rural scenery of nature, activities of rural farming, leisure and knowledge. According to these7criteria, defines rural tourism:rural tourism is a form of village-based tourism that follows the instructions of sustainability and satisfies tourists’ demands for leisure and knowledge, rural cultural heritage tangible and intangible, rural scenery of nature, activities of rural farming are its core resources, urban residents compose of its main tourist market.Thirdly, uses literature research, resolves and analyzes the potential influencing factors for rural tourism development from different aspects in internal, external and middle views, and established an influencing factors library containing50factors in accordance with recognition principles. And then identifies21key influencing factors combined with questionnaires and statistical analysis.Finally, by application of improved DEMATEL method, analysis the21key influencing factors, results shows that:the distance is a casual factor that has the greatest effect on other factors and the most difficulty to change in21key influencing factors; The satisfaction of resident and the acceptance of rural tourism of residents are two effect factors that are easier affected and changed than other factors. And based on the causal-effect relationship of21key influencing factors, constructs the casual-effect model of key influencing factors for rural tourism development to provide reference for development and management of rural tourism.
