In recent years, the state advocates to optimize trade structure, promote to change the way of foreign trade development. China’s trade policy tend to change toward "Cultivating new export competitive advantage" and "Promoting import comprehensive benefits". For this reason, this article sets out to study the main factors affecting competitive advantages of Chinese industrial enterprises from the perspective of microscopic enterprise level, so that we can provide reasonable advice for the trade policy making of China’s foreign trade department. This study tried to answer two questions:l)The import and export behavior of enterprise how to affect promotion of enterprise productivity,as well as the difference;2)Market competition caused by open trade policy how to help promote enterprise productivity. We firstly modified and developed Seker’s model to study how import&export trade and market competition affect growth of productivity from the angle of micro enterprise; And then, we use a large sample dataset of nearly0.8million industrial enterprises to test the hypotheses. The main conclusions were as follows:(1) This paper extends the border of enterprise heterogeneity theory, divide industrial enterprises into four categories according to their behavior patterns involving in international trade——two-way traders-only-importers、only-exporters and non-traders——different types of enterprises exists significant heterogeneity, the productivity of two-way traders are the biggest who are followed byonly-importerss、 only-exporters and non-traders.(2) International trade and enterprise productivity have a two-way granger causal relationship, on the one hand, the international did raise the productivity of industrial enterprises in China; On the other hand, the enterprises whose productivity levels higher than a critical value are more likely to participate in the international trade. In addition, imports are likely more conducive to improve the level of productivity of company than exports.(3) Market competition and enterprise productivity have an inverted u-shaped relationship, market competition enhancement can promote enterprise productivity grow that lower level of competition, and impede the growth of enterprise productivity at higher level of competition. On the basis of the above conclusions, this paper puts forward policy recommendations for the optimization of China’s trade structure and the promoting of foreign trade development.
