The emerging new technology innovation raises the requirement of system integration and cross-cutting collaboration in the technology and solution development. The compatibility and interoperation standards become the key to future advantageous market place. Therefore, an increasingly fierce competition for international standards has been brought out. This thesis aims at discussing the role of industry alliance standards in promoting the international trade. The discussion is based on the theory and empirical study, from which, it is proposed that the Chinese enterprise consider a more widely use of the means of alliance standards towards advancement in future international trade competition. Key issues in establishing an industry alliance are also discussed.The thesis starts from the literature research in the area of international trade and standards, and then moves to the research on standards definition, category, effects and the relationship between standard and intellectual property. A research on the macro and micro economic effects of standard, as well as its influence on the international trade is conducted. From the cost and benefit comparative analysis between alliance standard and international standard, the thesis shows that alliance standard has advantages as a mean in international standard competition.Further research discusses the challenges that China are facing in the international trade competition from the aspects of trade barriers and political factor influence, and the role of alliance standards in handling the challenges. Then the thesis uses the smart city development to build up a scenario to prove how alliance standard works in promoting the technology export, elevating the market standing and advancing the Chinese enterprises in international trade competition. At the end, policy advice are proposed for a better environment for alliance standard development.
