Does Export Enterprise Have A Higher Eco-friendliness Than Non-export One?

In the context of reform and opening up,China is seeing rapid growth in export volumes.However,as the scale of China’s exports growing,China’s environmental problems are more serious,and export trade conflicts between development and environment also become increasingly acute.As China more and more deeply involved in the international trade,export enterprises have to take measures to adjust to the frequent change of the environmental barrier in other countries,which requires the export enterprises with higher environmental friendly degree.In terms of theoretical basis,the paper based on the original heterogeneous enterprise business model,then added the hypothesis of technique selection and environmental pollution to explain the influence mechanism between export decisions and trade environment effect.The model shows that, in the same industry with the given pollution intensity,due to the actively use of environmentally friendly technology, the export enterprises use more clean technology and emit less pollutants.Trade liberalization will not only make the pollution industry transfer between different countries,but also to promote the transfer of pollution between different countries in the same industry.In terms of empirical testing,the paper analyzed the micro-data of industrial enterprises in 2004 by PSM (propensity score matching) method to investigate the effect between export and sewage.After selecting the proper matching variables,using Probit model to estimate the probability of the export as a matching reference.The results indicate the export enterprises spend 28%less on waste disposal than non-export enterprises do.This also verified the assumption that export help improve the environmental quality for an enterprise.The robustness test for different grouped data (grouped by ownership or region) illustrates that export help enterprises decrease the emission level.The policy suggests the government should improve the environmental regulations for the enterprises,and advocate the export and non-export enterprises to utilize sanitation production system which can eliminate the environmental differences between two types of companies. Furthermore,government should encourage the enterprises to internalize the cost to lift up the product value and avoid the influence of green trade barriers.
